We were honoured to host a presentation for our clients and agency on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). We heard from the incredible Tessa from Minus18 Foundation, who gave us all an insight into the challenges that LGBTQIA+ people face on a daily basis.
Some sobering statistics:
– 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees in Australia are not out to everyone at work
– 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months
– 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth experience abuse due to their identity
– In Victoria alone, four local councils have cancelled today’s IDAHOBIT events due to threats from extremist groups
In addition to her personal story, Tessa shared her top 3 tips for building brilliant LGBTQIA+ allyship:
1. Listen to the stories of LGBTQIA+ people – We know this community is full of different identities and no two people are the same. By listening to their stories you will be better supported to bring the theme of IDAHOBIT to life in a meaningful and powerful way.
2. Be visible – When you come across the stories of LGBTQIA+ people, whether it be via a podcast, book or movie… share it with others. You can also choose to show your support by wearing the rainbow flag; initially created as symbol of pride, allies are welcome to wear rainbow items as well. Displaying it is a signal to others that you respect their identity, and this form of visibility could be the one thing someone needs in order to know they can be their authentic selves with you.
3. Be visible as a team – There are plenty of ways to signal inclusion in the workplace; events, educational information, rainbows, and more. You can also use LGBTQIA+ allyship to prompt greater understanding, conversation, and positive change as a result.
